Do what you can, with what you have, and where you are. That’s it. No more, no less. Those wise words from Theodore Roosevelt sum up the essence of mindfulness in practical terms. I often think of this as being one of the benefits of being truly present in the moment. If we are truly present then we notice the moment more fully. We notice what we bring to that moment, and what we are not bringing. It allows us that choice.
Perhaps that’s where mindfulness can meet positivity. It’s where grace meets intention. It’s where productivity meets ease. It’s where effectiveness meets simplicity. When I am fully present it allows me the awareness to notice if I am bringing the best of myself to that moment, and if I am not then it offers me awareness of why I might not be, and whether I wish to shift that, if it hasn’t already shifted simply by bringing my awareness to it.
It’s not about putting more effort in, on the contrary, it’s about allowing all that gets in the way of bringing the best of myself to the moment to drop away. It allows fear to drop away. It allows judgement to drop away. It allows agenda to drop away. It allows distraction to drop away. It allows busyness to drop away.
When all of that has dissolved what is left is an open generosity. Kindness. Patience. Ease. Love. And from that space there is the total freedom simply to do what you can, with what you have, and where you are. It is that simple.
